David Wallace, Southern alumnus and Rachel Weisensee, senior theatre major, will be performing in HOT Scandals Opera at the Heartland Opera Theatre on Feb. 4 and 5.

Cabaret style musical opens in Joplin.

The Heartland Opera Theatre will be presenting Hot Scandals 2005, a musical that is billed as ‘a little naughty and a lot of fun’. The performances will be on February 4 & 5, and will start at 8 p.m.. The cast will include many students from Missouri Southern such as Rachel Weisensee. The tickets are $15 per person.

“It is a really cool evening,” said Rachel Weisensee, senior theatre major. “It is sort of in a cabaret setting and is different then most musical theatre show because of different artists, different people from around the community.”

The show will feature musical numbers from contemporary Broadway musicals to 1930s jazz and blues. Talent from all over the community will be performing. Reservations for this show are encouraged.

All shows for Feb. 4 and 5 are sold out. There is currently a waiting list for another performance on Feb. 10.

The seating will be done in a traditional cabaret style, which will consist of chairs and tables. A cash bar will be available and will serve beer, wine and cola. The production is being put on by Heartland Opera Theatre, which will be presenting other shows throughout the year.

The production is a change for those Southern students that are used to the Theatre at the University.

“It is a lot different than in the college.” Said Weisensee. “College is all educational, there is a very strict rehearsal regiment. Here they work around your schedule you come and go when you can. Costuming is very do what you want and wear what you want. Its not near as disciplined.”

The show may also be different for those used to educational theatre. The show is geared toward an adult audience, and as such it will not be appropriate for small children.
