Dr. Charles Thelen receives applause during his last jazz orchestra performance.

Sounds of Duke Ellington and Sammy Nestico filled Webster Hall auditorium April 12.

The Missouri Southern Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Jeremy Kushner, director jazz studies, played its latest concert.

The orchestra performed selections by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Moe Koffman, Ray Henderson, Mark Taylor and Sammy Nestico.

The songs played were, “The Swingin’ Shepard Blues,” “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Summer Samba,” “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” “In a Sentimental Mood,” “Soul Vacation” and “Basie-Straight Ahead”.

“I haven’t attended a jazz concert in years,” said Samantha Victory, freshman undeclared major. “I mean I haven’t been to a jazz concert in close to 20 years.”

Among the performers were two graduating seniors.

Time was taken during the concert to congratulate them for their accomplishments.

There was also a great response from the crowd when, in one selection, a musician from each section performed a solo.

The saxophone solo seemed to garner the greatest response from the crowd, and most of the audience seemed energized by the performance.

“I think they are really good,” Victory said.

“You can tell that they are really into the music.”

The concert was well-attended, though many people arrived late.
