Four All-Americans return to Southern

Four Lions came home with All-America honors in field events from the NCAA Division II indoor track and field meet March 11 and 12.

Senior Danee Jones and junior Matt Campbell had been to a national track meet before.

Jones made her fourth trip to the NCAA-II indoor track and field championships. She claimed her second All-America honor in indoor track and field with a fifth-place throw of 57-11. This was her third All-America honor overall at Southern.

Finishing second in the nation, Campbell cleared 17-1 1/2 and earn his first All-America honor at Southern. He was the first Lion to clear 17 twice in the same indoor season. Campbell was the outdoor national champion and the indoor national runner-up while he was at Neosho County (Kan.) Community College.

Senior Michael Stewart and freshman Jessica Selby broke their own school records at the championships.

Stewart earned All-America honors in the triple jump. He beat his own record with a leap of 49-6 1/2. This was his first appearance in the national meet.

Selby earned fourth place and received All-America honors with her throw of 46-6. This broke her own screcord by 4 1/2 inches. She qualified for nationals only two weeks earlier at the MIAA conference meet. In addition to competing in the meet, Selby also sang the national anthem to open .

Junior thrower Mike Hines and senior pole vaulter Kyle Rutledge also competed in the championships.

Hines competed in the shot put. He received 13th place with a throw of 52-1 3/4.

Rutledge also competed in the pole vault. However, he did not place.

Freshman Alison Walker qualified in the 800-meter run but was forced to withdraw prior to the meet due to an injury.

The outdoor season is well underway and the outdoor NCAA-II championships are set for May 26-28 in Abilene, Texas.
