Cam Martin stands out in debut games

The Missouri Southern Basketball team has started their season and is off to a strong start going 1-1 in their first two games of the season on November 9 and 10 in Makanto, Minnesota.

In the first game of the season the Lions lost 89-77 to the 18th ranked team in the nation in St. Cloud State. The Lions were only down by three at one point in the second half before the 11-2 run to seal the victory against the Lions. The Lions top performers of the game were sophomore, Cam Martin who had 28 points, junior, Ted Brown led the team in rebounds with eight, and Reggie Tharp had six assists to lead the team. 

In their second game of the season the Lions won 100-98 off of a last second layup by junior, Kinzer Lambert to seal the victory for the Lions. Martin had another monster game with 49 points to score nearly half of the Lions points. Martin also recorded 10 rebounds to record his first double double of the season.

Martin tied an MSSU record with his 49-point performance for most points scored in a single game.

Lambert was second in scoring with 25 points while shooting nearly 40 percent on the night. Tharp and junior, Elijah Clark led the team in assists with six.

“We are feeling confident right now we lost a game Friday that we thought we should have won and we turned around the next night and beat a very good team” said Martin, “It was a great feeling scoring that many points it also shows how unselfish my teammates are to get me the ball so often and put me in positions to score,” said Martin.

The Lions’ next game was yesterday at 7 p.m. against the University of Missouri-St. Louis The Tritons are currently undefeated at 3-0 coming off of a win against Webster University. Their leading scorer so far this season is senior Eric Dust with 46. In a close second in scoring is junior, Ronnie Carson with 41. Due to press time and the game being after the Chart’s press time we were unable to report a score. Check the website for an update on Thursday night’s game. 

The Lions will also be traveling to 2018 Puerto Rico Classic where they will be playing in San Juan Puerto Rico. The team will be there from November 20-22. Their first matchup will be against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras at 1:00 p.m.
