Two games decide team’s MIAA title

With only two games left, the Missouri Southern women’s soccer team is facing an almost most-win situation.

On Oct. 30, the Lions faced the Washburn University Lady Blues at Hal Boden Field.

“It was very physical,” said Amy Davis, sophomore midfielder. “There was a lot of tripping involved, but it made it a lot more fun.”

The game ended up being a 0-0 tie, going into two sudden-death overtime periods.

“We’re playing well; we just need to get some balls to get the back of the net,” said head coach Trevor Wachsman.

On Oct. 26, the Lions played Southwest Baptist University, and also tied with the Bearcats.

On Oct. 23, the Lions played Truman State and beat the Bulldogs 2-1.

The win over TSU marks the first time in school history the Lions have defeated the Bulldogs.

The Lions scored the two goals on headers by freshman midfielder Nikki Llewellyn with the cross by sophomore midfielder Lindsay Robinson, and the other goal by freshman midfielder Angela Westphal, with the assist also by Robinson.

The Lions scored their two goals within the first 10 minutes of the game, and didn’t allow Truman to score until there was 18 minutes left in the game.

The Lady Lions say one thing that helps them win games are the fans.

“The fans are amazing,” said Jentri White, freshman midfielder/forward. “They pump us up, which makes us play harder.”

With only two games left, the Lions need to win at least one of the final games to win the conference.

If they win one and lose one, they would be conference champs, but there would be a possibility that another team could tie with them, but if they win both of their final two games, they would be definite conference champs.

The Lions are currently fifth in the region, and technically second in the conference. The Lions current record is 10-4-4.

On Friday, the Lions will play at Central Missouri State University. Last time the Lions played CMSU, they won 5-1. The Mules are currently on a seven game undefeated streak.

“We need to play our game,” said Erin Whelan, sophomore midfielder/forward. “We need to play with intensity and finish the game.”

Their final game will be on Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. against Northwest Missouri State University at Hal Bodon Field. NWMSU beat Southern once this season.

“We’re focused about going out and just playing soccer,” Wachsman said.
