Senators slate León meeting

Casino Night was the main topic of discussion during Student Senates, Nov. 9 meeting in the Billingsly Student Center.

Senate president Eric Norris discussed how the event was going to be run and the different groups of people it needed to set-up, break down and run the event that will be held at 7 p.m., Nov. 17 in the Student Life Center.

“Casino night should be fun for everybody,” said Kristen Duwe, Senate secretary.

Students will be able to buy prizes with chips they win playing games such as Texas Hold’em, Black Jack and Bingo.

Chips will be available at a price of $10 worth of chips for $1 or $60 worth of chips for $5.

“We have all kinds of prizes from a three hour spa treatment, tanning packages and haircuts to car washes, sportswear and all kinds of food,” Duwe said.

She said there were several fast food restaurants that donated gift certificates, which should entice students along with the fact that all the proceeds go to a good cause, United Way.

Senate is not the only student organization helping on Casino Night. The Campus Activities Board is also lending a hand. Plus, Norris and Adam Griffin, Senate advisors, met with Sodexho earlier in the week to talk about having food at the event. Sodexho not only agreed to cater the event, but offered a donation to be made at a later date.

Also discussed at Senate was the upcoming meeting with León on Nov. 30. “This is a good time to ask questions about projects you are working on in your committees,” said Greg Salzer, Senate vice president. “Don’t just ask questions about parking, like in the past.”

All questions for León have to be submitted before the meeting so he can prepare for them.

Senate also allocated $800 to Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society for students to attend the Midwest Sociological Society Annual Meeting in Omaha.

There were also two first readings. The Russian Club has requested $411.75 to attend The Nutcracker, performed by the Moscow Baller, in St. Louis. The other first reading was a request by the Spanish Club for $630 to help with its performance of Celebración at the Vandivort theatre in Springfield.

Senate had $7,636 in its budget at the beginning of its meeting.

There were three senators absent – Danielle Dunn, Monique Canada and Whitney Souza.
