Softball team’s record improves to 14-10 with sweep against SBU

The Missouri Southern Lions softball team improved to 14-10 on the season with a two-game sweep over the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats on April 1 at home.

In the first game, the Lions beat the Bearcats 5-4.

Freshman catcher Angie Turner belted the only home run of the game (her second of the season), while also picking up a triple going two for three at the plate.

Junior outfielder Afton Horst went two for four, and junior first baseman Racheal Bowen went one for two.

Freshman shortstop Andrea Childs also went one for two.

Junior designated hitter Alyssa Park hit two for three, and freshman third baseman Amanda Godfrey went one for three.

Sophomore outfielder Kate Brittan went one for two.

In the second game, freshman pitcher Lacee Craig picked up her 10th win of the season pitching a complete game.

She struck out four, while walking two as the Lions downed the Bearcats 5-1.

In rout to the win, the Lions belted out 11 hits.

Horst hit her second triple of the season in the game going two for three.

Sophomore second baseman J.T. Taylor went one for three; Bowen went two for four.

Childs went two for three, and junior outfielder Missy Clark went one for two.

Park went two for three, and Brittan went one for three.

On the season, the Lions have picked up wins over Arkansas Tech University, Southwest Oklahoma State University, SBU, Central Missouri State University, Northern (S.D.) State, Fort Hays (Kan.) State University, the University of Central Arkansas and Northeastern (Okla.) State University.

Team leaders in hitting for the season are Taylor and Turner with two home runs each.

Bowen has seven doubles, and Turner has three triples. Bowen also has a team high 12 RBIs.

Team leaders in pitching are Craig with 10 wins and 53 strikeouts.

Schneider has the most saves with two, and Stanford has the best ERA with a 1.20.

The team played April 6 at Emporia State university, but results were unavailable at the time of press.

The Lions next home game is Tuesday against Pittsburg State University. That double-header begins at 5 p.m.

The Lions’ MIAA conference record is now 1-5.
