Softball team sweeps home double-header

Sweeping the two-game series, Missouri Southern’s softball team hosted the University of Central Arkansas April 18.

Game 1 was won by a score of 6-4 and Game 2 ended 4-2.

UCA started Game 1 with one run in the first inning, but Southern answered with three of their own in the bottom of the first.

UCA tied it up in the third, but the Lions pounced again in the bottom of the inning, going up 4-3. They scored their last two runs in the fifth inning, and UCA answered with one run in the seventh.

Lacee Craig, freshman pitcher, completed the game, earning her a 12-5 record. Craig struck out seven batters in the game.

Game two started with no runs until Southern brought three runners in in the third inning. UCA scored once in the following inning. The Lions scored their fourth run in the sixth, but UCA made another final-inning run to bring the score to 4-2.

Callie Stanford, senior pitcher, pitched five inning, giving her the win. She is now 2-2.

Amy Schneider, senior pitcher, threw the final two innings, giving her the save.

On April 15, the Lions played in the Pittsburg State Classic, but lost both the games they played.

Southwest Baptist took on the Lions in the first game. SBU beat out Southern 3-2.

Tara Curtis, freshman pitcher, was credited with the loss, bringing her to 2-2.

The second game saw the Lions against PSU. The Gorillas bested Southern 4-2.

Craig received the loss for that game.

The Lions are now 17-15 overall and 2-8 in the MIAA.

Friday, Southern hosts Truman State University at 2 p.m. Saturday, Northwest Missouri State University comes to Joplin to play the Lions. That series starts at noon.

Wednesday, the Lions will play host the Missouri Western State University. That match-up begins at 3 p.m.
