Softball teams earns berth in conference tournament

Runs escaped the Lions’ softball team as four home games yielded four shut-out losses last weekend.

On April 21, Truman State University came to Southern and handed the Lions a 7-0 and a 2-0 loss.

In Game 1, TSU started off with one run in the first. They scored one more run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Bulldogs topped of the game with their final three runs in the seventh.

In the first game, Truman State’s Loni Wedemeier allowed four hits, while striking out seven, and walking none. Missouri Southern’s senior pitcher Amy Schneider pitched 6.2 innings and picked up the loss, allowing nine hits, four runs, while striking out six and walking two.

Freshman Tara Curtis came in the finish the game, allowing five hits, and three runs.

Game 2 saw TSU score its two runs in the third inning.

Lacee Craig, freshman pitcher, picked up the loss. Her record is now 12-6.

On April 22, Southern hosted Northwest Missouri State University. NWMSU swept the series with 1-0 and 5-0 wins.

The sole run in Game 1 was scored in the seventh inning of the game.

Schneider picked up her second loss of the weekend, bringing her to 1-8.

In Game 2, NWMSU scored one run in the first, one in the third and its last three in the sixth.

In the second game, the Bearcats starting pitcher Talina Canon held the Lions to only one hit, as the Bearcats took the game, 5-0. Taylor picked up the only hit in the game for the Lions. Senior pitcher Callie Stanford started the game, going 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Curtis then came in and pitched one and one third of an inning, allowing one hit, while walking two. Finally in the seventh inning, Craig came in the finish the game. Allowing no hits, but walking two. Stanford took the loss.

Southern’s home double-header against Missouri Western State University April 26 was postponed due to inclement weather. The two will play Friday in Warrensburg at the Central Missouri State Jennies Invitational.

Saturday, the Lions are slated to play Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in Edwardsville.

The Lions are 17-19 overall and 2-12 in the MIAA. However, they clinched a berth in the conference tournament last week.
