Baseball wins one surrounded by losses

One win accompanied a trio of losses for the baseball Lions last weekend against Washburn University.

The Lions traveled to Topeka April 21-22 for a pair of double-headers.

On April 21, the Ichabods swept the Lions with 6-5 and 13-11 wins.

In Game 1, Missouri Southern started the game off with a run by Juan Hernandez, freshman outfielder. WU struck back in the bottom of the inning with three runs. The Ichabods earned their other three runs in the second.

Southern started back with a run by Kyle Knight, junior pitcher/outfielder. He was brought in off a double by Landon Harris, senior outfielder.

The Lions picked up two more in the fifth with home runs by Brett Velliquette, junior outfielder, and Hernandez.

Gabe Hensley, sophomore utility/pitcher, scored the final Lions; run in the seventh. He was brought in by Velliquette, but it would not enough for the win.

Michael Meyer, junior pitcher, struck out five batters in the loss. Meyer is now 3-9.

Game 2 began with three Southern runs by Velliquette, Matthew Mantle, sophomore shortstop, and Luke Lawver, junior catcher/pitcher. WU answered with four in the bottom of the first and three more in the second.

Harris hit a home run in the third, but WU brought in two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Velliquette and Chris Farmer, junior pitcher/first baseman, both scored on a triple by Hernandez in the fourth. Hernandez was brought in by a Sac fly by Mantle.

The Ichabods scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.

In the sixth inning, Velliquette again tripled, to bring Farmer and Hernandez home. Hernandez scored on a wild pitch, and Mantle scored to tie the game when Knight doubled to right field. However, WU earned its last two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the scored remained 13-11 until the end.

Warren Gaydusek, junior catcher/pitcher/infielder, pitched 4.2 innings, giving him the loss. He is now 0-2.

On April 22, Southern split with WU.

Game 1 went to WU, 5-1.

The Lions’ sole run came in the first inning as Mantle scored from second off a Lawver single. Lucas Vestal, junior pitcher, picked up the loss, making him 0-6. The Lions won Game 2 with a score of 5-4.

WU led 3-0 until the seventh inning when Mantle, Lawver and Harris all scored runs. Mantle and Harris scored again in the eighth giving the Lions the 5-3 lead, but WU would try to even it up again with one more run in the bottom of the inning.

Lawver pitched the last five innings of the game and picked up the win. He is now 1-1.

Overall, the Lions are 9-35, and they are 4-20 in the MIAA.
