Southern competes in golf

Opening their spring schedule, the Missouri Southern golf team has competed in three tournaments.

On March 20-21, the Lions finished sixth out of 12 teams at the East Central (Okla.) Oak Hills Spring Classic in Ada, Okla.

Southern finished 44 strokes behind the winner, the University of Central Oklahoma.

The Lions’ top finisher was Eric Byers, junior, who tied for 24th. Byers shot 154 in the tournament, 10 over par.

Tommy Clifford, junior, finished tied for 26th with a score of 155.

Southern traveled to the Fort Hays (Kan.) State/Tom Johansen Invitational March 27-28. The Lions finished fifth out of nine teams, with a total score of 945. Central Missouri State University won the tournament with a 925.

Clifford was Southern’s top finisher in fifth place. He shot 230, 17 over par.

Byers finished in 15th place with a score of 237.

On April 2-4, the Lions traveled to St. Joseph to compete in the MWSU Invitational Tournament.

Southern placed fourth out of nine in this tournament, with a total of 612. Indian Hills Community College won the tournament with a score of 573.

Clifford was again the Lions’ top finisher. He shot 146, 2 above par, putting him in a tie for sixth place.

Byers tied for 15th, shooting 150.

The Lions are fourth in the MIAA with 16 points. Missouri Western State University leads the conference with 25 points.

Southern next plays at the Iron Horse Invitational in Leawood, Kan. on Monday and Tuesday.
