Group takes break from having weekly meetings

Collaboration was the key topic in the student activities office.

Tori Maloukis, director of student activities, said her first year at the helm has been a successful one. However, she would like to see more student participation and unity among groups.

“We’ve got over 80 student organizations here on campus and it seems like every one is it’s own entity and nobody ever works with anybody to do much of anything,” Maloukis said.

She said she is trying to set new rules and guidelines next year to promote a synergetic environment but is unsure if the students such rules would actually work.

“One thing our school is lacking is a little bit of tradition and school spirit,” Maloukis said.

But, she hopes to help change that with a little reorganization of the way the Campus Activities Board is run. She started out fall semester by having CAB members elect officers, which several existing members said have already changed things for the better.

Graham Dickinson, CAB vice president, said he was glad officers were elected this year. After being on the Board for several semesters, he said things have ran much smoother and the Board has been more productive this year.

Recently, the Board has taken a few weeks off to let the members begin studying for finals and focus on other schoolwork.

“There’s really no need to have more meetings if we don’t absolutely have to have them,” Maloukis said.

With only a few big events left in the semester, Dickinson said everything is already planned so there is no real reason to have a weekly meeting. But CAB will have at least one more meeting to elect officers for fall semester and delegate responsibilities for Finals Madness.

Upcoming events include movie night on April 20. The campus picnic will be on May 5 and Finals Madness will be on May 10.

The picnic will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include acoustic music, food and a rock wall.

Finals Madness will be from 7-11 p.m. and will include food, a rock wall, sand beach volleyball and live music.

CAB has already booked Cinna the Poet, The Ben Miller Band, Macon and Brown Bag Special to play at Finals Madness and already has plans to bring more music to campus next fall.

The next meeting will be at 2 p.m. April 19 in the student activities office. For more information, contact Maloukis in the student activities at 625-9320.
