Lions announce new signees

Men’s track, golf and both basketball teams have announced some of their latest recruits.

The track team alone has signed 11 more recruits raising the total number of new additions to 15. Five of the signees will compete in cross country as well.

Dan Allen of Franklin, N.J. is a multiple-events competitor and holds state records in the 200-meter dash and pole vault.

Brennan Benkert comes from St. Clair (Mo.) High School where he has twice won all-state honors in cross country.

Isaac Garcia of Victory Christian School in Tulsa, Okla. was a 2004 state cross country champion and finished fourth at the state meet this past season.

Another cross country and track runner added to the team is Nick Heberle of Jefferson City High School. Heberle is a two-time all-district and all-sectional performer in cross country.

John-Mark Lewis of Poplar Bluff (Mo.) High School has been added for both cross country and track and field.

Daniel Van Hooser of Joplin High School is a two-year letter winner in track.

Another local student added to the Lions team is Brett Vaughn, of Mt. Vernon High School. Vaughn has earned all-state honors three times and is a four-year letter winner.

Additionally, Andrew Wright of Carthage High School comes to the Lions as a sprinter.

Robert Corn, head men’s basketball coach has also announced a few new Lions recently signed to his team.

Deonte Cox, a 6-foot-8 and 220-pounder from St. Louis Community College-Forest Park ,has signed with MSSU for the 2006-07 basketball season. Daniel Hurst, a 6-foot-2 and 175-pound guard from Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy, Ark will also join the team.

The women’s basketball team has recruited Ela Zawadka, a 6-foot native of Torun, Poland. She played the last two seasons at Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas.

The golf team gains Adam Nelson of Labette County High School in Parsons, Kan. Nelson comes to Southern after three straight all-state finishes in golf.
